Nebraska . . fascinating land of the Quivera.
Since the fifteenth century when the Spanish Cavalier, Coronado, led the search for the mythical gold, rare jewels, and hoarded treasures of the "Seven Cities of Cibolo," this intriguing land has beckoned to persons of all ages, rank, and position . . . providing each with the answer to his special desire whether for sport, adventure, romance even to scientific delving into the secrets of ages long gone.
Every highway and byway of the state carries you through the settings of great historic events Across those stages have moved many actors the great Indian tribes of the Pawnee, Sioux, Cheyenne The mountain men. The traders, trappers, and soldiers. The pioneers of the west. So little imagination is needed still to visualize the great prairie schooner trains winding slowly across Nebraska's plains to build the west. Here were found those historic characters, General Fremont, '"Buffalo Bill" Cody, Kit Carson, Manual Lisa, Jim Bridger, General Kearney, Fontenelle, Blackbird, Spotted Horse, General Thayer, and many others equally famous.
The blood stirring, adventurous spirit of the old west is revived for you when you visit those historic spots and view the many memorials Nebraskans hove erected to the men and their deeds of that day. That is the old west still beckoning you.

Man-made beauty? Surely. From all the world they come to see the magnificent architecture of the Nebraska State Capitol at Lincoln. For the art lover there is a rare feast at the Joslyn Memorial, Omaha And for everyone, from circus-loving boy to bespectacled scientist, the epitome of marvels is reached with a view of the Mammoths in the Hall of Elephants at Morrill Hall, University of Nebraska at Lincoln.
Natural wanders? There's every breath-taking marvel from all of Mother Nature's bag of tricks. Evergreen wooded mountains, little lakes where the fighting bass challenge, the brown, shimmering Sand Hills where you hear the whirring wings of ducks, geese, quail, or pheasant.

LITTLE KNOWN FACTS
Although once a part of the great American desert, Nebraska has more miles of running water than any other state. Twelve hundred lakes are dotted throughout its area. First among these is Crescent Lake, the largest lake in the state.
Geographically, Nebraska is the central state of the Union. The highest altitude in the state is 5,340 feet at a point on the table-land between Banner and Kimball Counties near the Wyoming line. Some conception of the size of this state can be gained from the fact that Cherry County alone is larger than the state of Connecticut, and yet has fewer residents than work in one building in New York City.
In total wealth, the Cornhusker state places sixteenth, but it is up to sixth place in per capital wealth. The death rate is lower than in any state of equal population, and the material and infant mortality rate is one of the lowest in the Union.
No matter what part of the state you visit, you will be near landmarks commemorating the important events in the development of the early west. The old Overland and Oregon Trails wind across the state along the famous Platte river over plains where once thousands of buffalo and elk roamed the prairie. These old trails are well=marked with monuments and markers. Outstanding among these landmarks of the Oregon Trail is Chimney rock and Mitchell Pass located near Bayard and Scottsbluff in the western part of Morrill and Scotts Bluff Counties.
Fort Atkinson, Fort Robinson, Fort Niobrara, and Fort Kearney, all of which played such an important part as protection for the pioneers from Indians, are historical places well worthy of a visit. Fort Robinson in Dawes County near Crawford, still is in use by the government. Fort Niobrara is now a federal game reserve. Near North Platte is the famous ranch of "Buffalo Bill" Cody.
Important fights of the Indian wars are marked by Fort McPherson Cemetery, Massacre Canyon Monument, and Pawnee Battlefield. Fort McPherson Cemetery is near the town of Maxwell, south of the Platte River. This is a national cemetery where are buried soldiers of the Sioux and Cheyenne Indian wars. Spotted Horse, the well-known Pawnee scout, was buried there.
Massacre Canyon Monument in Hitchcock County, marks the site of the last great battle between the Sioux and Pawnee. It was a Pawnee Battlefield where the Pawnee tribe surrendered on July 12, 1859 to the Nebraska militia, commanded by General John M. Thayer.
In extreme northwestern Nebraska along Warbonnet Creek is Warbonnet Battlefield, marking the settling of another famous encounter between the Indians and the white men. It was here that the Fifth Cavalry, commanded by General Merritt, fought the Cheyenne Indians. Legend has it that Yellow Hand, chief of the Cheyennes, was slain by "Buffalo Bill."
Another intensely interesting Nebraska community is a section in Sioux County near Agat where some of the most famous fossil beds in the world are located. Here was found the bones of many pre-historic animals that once roamed over Nebraska and which are now mounted at Morrill Hall in Lincoln and in museums throughout the world. Some of the specimens found here are among the rarest ever found.
The visitor who cannot arrange to visit all the historical spots in the state can find much of interest concerning them by visiting the exhibits of relics of early Nebraska that are shown at Arbor Lodge, the old home of J. Sterling Morton, founder of Arbor Day, located near Nebraska City. Other fine exhibits are shown in the section of the State Capitol Building devoted to the Nebraska State Historical Society.
Several thousands of acres have ben set aside by the Nebraska State and by the National Government for parks as memorials, and for recreation and game and forest preserve purposes. There are two national forests within the state. The larger of these is locate din Thomas County near the town of Halsey. The other is in northern Cherry County. There are thousands of acres covered with pine forests. Millions of small trees are raised in these forest reserves for distribution throughout the state. These two forests offer the visitor a beautiful sight, as they show an amazing transformation of the sandhills into beautiful tree-clad areas.
Nebraska is noted throughout the world for its breeding ground for migratory water fowl and numerous shore birds, as well as the prairie chicken, grouse, and pheasant. In Garden and Cherry Counties the Federal Government recently established two of the largest sanctuaries for waterfowl in the country. Millions of ducks of all species will be found nesting here throughout the summer months. Nebraska is second among the states for pheasant hunting and third among all he states of the hunting of ducks and geese. It ranks as the tenth highest state for production of fun, ad is one of the first four important states in the breeding of ducks and shore birds.
Over 438 varieties of birds are found in Nebraska. The state bird is the Meadow Lark and the state flower is the Golden Rod.

For breath-taking beauty, come to Arbor Lodge State Park in the springtime when the apple trees are in bloom! This park is situated in one of the largest apple growing centers in the world, and the entire countryside is a vision of loveliness then. The park is a memorial lo J. Sterling Morton. the founder of Arbor Day. The park opens to visitors April 1 and remains open until the first of December Until the middle of June, visitor-S ore permitted to inspect the mansion at Arbor Lodge only from l:30 p. m. until 5 p. m. After June 15, visitors are admitted in the morning as well. Excellent picnicking facilities are provided.
Niobrara State Park, located at the town of Niobrara in Knox County, is a beautiful wooded island of 800 acres in the Missouri River. One of Nebraska's game reserves and bird rearing stations is located here, and excellent fishing is available in the Missouri River, the Niobrara River, and pork lagoons. Camp sites and cabins are furnished for the convenience of visitors. The park can be reached by following state highway No. 12.
Rugged and majestic beauty greet the visitor to Chadron State Park. Here, there are a thousand acres of timbered canyons, towering bluff's, stately pine trees, spring-fed streams, wild canyons, and weird natural rock formations. This is Nebraska's largest pork and one which will delight any vacationist. It is situated eight miles south of Chadron on state highway No. 19 and can be reached from state highway No. 20 leading from the east and west and on highway No. 19 connecting with state highway No. 2 from south and east.
Every facility is made available for visitors--cabins, swimming pool. playgrounds for the children, on auditorium for public gatherings, a restaurant, a store, fish pools, protected trails for horseback riding and hiking--everything to make the park ideal for a vacation.
In the Ponca Indian country overlooking the Missouri River, several hundred acres of forest-covered, majestic, scenic land hos been set aside for Ponca State Pork. Only recently finished, it has already become one of the popular vacation lands of the state, and is a delightful place lo camp and picnic. Shelters, lookouts, horseback trails, and other modern features have been provided for your pleasure and convenience. This park is located in Dixon County near the town of Ponca, and is easily reached over a well-marked road from that point.
Stolley State Park is on example of tree planting on the prairies. Hundreds of fine tree specimens and a great profusion of flowers make this a beautiful, cool place to picnic. The park embraces 43 acres, situated south and adjacent to Grand Island in Holl County. It is reached over state highways No. 2 and No. 11.
Victoria Springs State Park centers around an important landmark in Nebraska's early history, mineral springs in Custer County. Preserved within the pork ore two log cabins built in 1873, which odd historical interest to the locality. A lake provides recreation in swimming, boating, and fishing for sports lovers. There ore cabins and picnicking facilities.
Most of us when traveling like to think back to the beginning of things. This pork is located at the site of old Fort Kearney which played such an important part in the westward trek of the pioneers Some of the old earth-work of the fort may still be seen there. Camping is now permitted in fort Kearney State Park It is reached from slate highway No. 10 near the town of Newark in Kearney County.
Nebraska's State Parks ore provided by the state for the benefit and recreation of Nebraska Citizens and visitors. All are invited and urged to enjoy to the fullest the facilities that ore offered. Thousands of persons, including visitors From every part of the United States and nearly every nation over the world, do enjoy these parks every year. Very few arbitrary rules, regulations or restrictions hove been set up. The innate courtesy, respect for property, and sense of fairness shown by the great majority of people makes policing and regulatory measures almost unnecessary. Where such measures and rules are in effect, it is for the purpose of preserving for that larger majority of people the pleasure and property of these parks from the careless or destructive acts of hoodlums or thoughtless persons. Your cooperation. as a visitor, is requested.

It is the man who loves to fish who helps to keep the world at its best, who is the greatest fighter for its beauties, and its ideals, and all because he has come to realize and understand that glorious thrill of that intimate contact with nature which one finds when he has a rod in his hand."

True sportsmen take every precaution and care to prevent accidents. Enjoyment of hunting can be instantly turned to tragedy if some careless ad results in o serious occident. Never forget for a moment that firearms of any kind are potentially dangerous and must be treated with respect. Hunters should strictly observe, and insist that all members of their hunting parties observe, the following simple precautions.

HUNTING AND FISHING IN NEBRASKA
Give a man a gun, o dog, and set him down almost anywhere in Nebraska and he hos found his hunter's paradise. For among all the states, Nebraska ranks second for pheasant hunting and third for waterfowl. The conditions are ideal for many kinds of game on the fields and prairies, lakes, rivers, marshland, and woodlands.
Nebraska has gained greatest renown among sportsmen for its pheasant hunting-by Jar the most popular hunting at this time. These birds are spreading rapidly and now are found in most sections of the state. However, the best reports still are coming from the northeastern section of the state, particularly Cedar, Knox, Holt, and Dixon Counties and the North Platte and Republican Valleys. Rarely does a hunter fail to obtain the full legal bog in these sections.
Several wide areas offer excellent hunting of ducks and geese, for which the state ranks third. The great areas of the North Platte and Missouri Rivers and the sand hill lakes literally teem with wild fowl during the season. The counties of Morrill, Keith, Lincoln, Garden, and Dundy also offer excellent hunting for ducks and geese.
Prairie chickens, which once abounded throughout the Nebraska plains, hove been so depleted in numbers that the season is closed on them at the present time in order to allow them to increase in number. However, their number is now increasing.
In the timbered areas along the Platte, Blue, and Elkhorn rivers, there is very good raccoon hunting. Squirrels ore found throughout eastern Nebraska, and are particularly numerous in southeastern Nebraska.
Nebraska has not generally been known as a fishing state. However, within the boundaries of the state are many lakes and more miles of running water than within the boundaries of any other state. Most of the river-S and lakes offer excellent fishing.
In the western part of the state, the disciple of Isaac Walton may find his satisfaction in trout, boss, perch, crappie. and sunfish in the lakes and streams of Cherry and Brown Counties. The Cherry County lakes Or€ known as the Woodlake group and include Marsh, Red Deer, Trout, Clear, Dewey, Pelican, Dad's, Beaver, and numerous smaller lakes. Twelve of this group are known as meandered lakes and are owned by the state. Enders, Long, Willow, Clear. and Moon lakes are within Brown County.

Another group of popular lakes are the beautiful "Sand Hill Lakes" located in Sheridan, Garden, and McPherson Counties. This group offers some of the best fishing to be found in the middlewest.
In northern Nebraska the fisherman's delight rainbow trout, are found in numbers in the many streams and creeks. The chief streams for trout fishing ore Long Pine Creek at Long Pine, Plum Creek at Johnstown, the Snake River in Cherry County, and a number of streams in northern Sheridan, Dawes, and Sioux Counties.
In Scotts Bluff and Morrill Counties the drainage ditches hove been well stocked with trout The some is true of Lodge Pole Creek in Cheyenne County and Rock Creek in Dundy County.
Popular lakes for the fishing of boss, catfish, bluegill, and crappie ore Lake Ericson, Pibel Lake, and Diamond Bar. Crystal Lake in Dakota County, Carter Lake in Douglas County, Arterburn Lake in Chose County, Maywood Lake in Frontier County, and the many sand pit lakes along the Platte River.
Hundreds of residents and visitors each year go to the Elkhorn, Republican, lower Platte, and Missouri Rivers for cat fish, and many o small boy is delighted with the bullhead fishing in the small ponds and lakes of southern Nebraska. In the upper Platte river. there is excellent pike fishing, especially in Scotts Bluff and Morrill Counties Many pike are taken from the streams in these counties each year Besides these natural fishing spots, there ore a number of state-owned lakes established by the Game, Forestation, Parks Commission. Among these ore Memphis Lake in Sounders County, Wellfleet Lake in Lincoln County, Cottonmill Lake in Buffalo County, Loup City Lake in Sherman County, Verdon Lake in Richardson County, Minatare Lake in Scotts Bluff County, and the Sand Pits of Louisville and Fremont. In all these state lakes, boss, perch, crappie, sunfish, and bullheads furnish the principal catches.

Adjacent to Arnold in Custer County, offers excellent camping grounds on the honks of the South Loup River and boss, crappie, and bullhead fishing in the 10 acre lake. State highways No. 27 and No. 40 lead to this attractive spot.
In lake region of Cherry County, furnishes a spot where sports-lovers can indulge in both fishing and hunting. In the 1,500 acres of marsh and open water ore found boss and perch. During the gunning season, hunters con shoot their quota of waterfowl here. State highway No. 20 to Wood Lake, then via Red Deer Lake Road
A small tract of land on the south banks of the peaceful little West Blue River, is an ideal place to go for an overnight fishing trip. Catfish and crappie ore caught here. Take state highway No. 15 and turn off at bridge over West Blue between Milford and Dorchester.
Near Champion in Chose County, looks out on Champion Lake, which is located on Frenchman River. Fishermen will find bass. crappie, and bullhead fishing here. Take state highway No. 6, thence No. 48. Water area is 20 acres.
A 100 acre tract on the banks of o pretty little State owned lake near Kearney, can be reached by taking state highways No. 3O and No. 10. Fishermen like it because of the many kinds of fish found there. Catches include sunfish, crappies, catfish, and bullheads. Fine accommodations here for campers and trailers. Over 50 acres of water.
Consists of 160 acres of land surrounding beautiful Cottonwood Lake, which is one-half mile east of Merriman in western Cherry County. As the lake is owned by the State, fishing for the boss, sunfish, and perch found is free. State highway No. 20 goes within one-half mile of the lake. Water area approximately 80 acres.
Situated on Red Willow Creek, northeast of Hayes Center in Hayes County, is on the site of the lost big buffalo hunt in which Buffalo Bill and Duke Alexis participated. The grounds consist of 80 acres, and fishing and picnicking are the recreations offered. Bass, crappie, and bullhead are found here. Can be reached from state highway No. 17. Water area 60 acres.
This area, located on the Elkhorn River in Dodge County, is under construction during 1939 but will be open to the public thereafter Fishing, picnicking and camping sites are available. Take State Highway No. 275.
Of 345 acres furnishes the center for another of Nebraska's delightful recreation grounds. Located at Hyannis in Grant County, one mile north of state highway No. 2, the lake is easily found. Bass, crappies, and bullheads are found here, Boats ore available and the spot furnishes good camping grounds several hundred acres of water are found here.
Visitors ore welcome here all times of the year. An excellent aquarium showing native Nebraska fish is open to the public daily free of charge Excellen1 picnic facilities are available. Owing to the propagation ponds the grounds "are dosed at 7 P. M. each day. Take State Highway No. 85, leading off of No. 6 three miles south of Gretna.
Situated in southeastern Holt County, consists of 350 acres, which include a large lake. It furnishes an excellent place for secluded camping and, since the State owns the lake, fishing is free. Take state highway No, 8 to Ewing, continue southwest 23 miles; or highway No 53, continuing north from Bartlett. Several hundred acres of water is found here.
Includes three pretty little lakes near Alexandria, just across the Jefferson County line The 10 acres of land surrounding the 20 acres of water furnish excellent camping and picnicking grounds. Fishermen catch bullheads and sunfish here.
Just south of Ainsworth in the Brown County lake group, is the center of another of Nebraska's recreation spots. Eighty acres in size, the lake is partly owned by the State and on that part fishing is free. Bass, crappies, and perch furnish the cotch. By toking highway No, 20 to Ainsworth and continuing south, you will reach it.
Consisting of 130 acres of land, and several hundred acres of water, is located four miles southwest of Hay Springs in Sheridan County. Crappie, sunfish, and bullheads are caught in this partly owned State lake. State highway No. 20, thence five miles southeast, leads to the grounds where good camping sites ore found.
One of Nebraska's newer pleasure spots, is situated on Medicine Creek, adjacent to Wellfleet in Lincoln County. The eighty acre tract and sixty acres of water can be reached by taking state highway No. 23.
A landmark in the early history of Nebraska, mineral springs in Custer County now furnish the center for beautiful Victoria Springs State Pork. Two log cabins, built in 1873, odd historical interest to the spot where a Jake provides swimming, booting, and fishing for sports-lovers. Cabins for vacationists and a splendid grove of trees for picnickers leave nothing to be desired in the way of recreation spots.
Is made up of 30 acres of land around a 20 acre lake. The banks of the Middle Loup River provide an excellent place to picnic and camp, Bullheads, crappie, and sunfish ore found here. On the Middle Loup where highway No. 16 crosses.
Adjacent to Memphis in Saunders County, hos as the main attraction a 77 acre lake which is one of the largest artificial lakes in eastern Nebraska. For recreation, the grounds offers fishing for crappies, sunfish, and bullheads, as well as good comping grounds. Follow the Ashland-Wahoo highway and you will reach it.
Furnishes good fishing and comping sites. Bass, crappie. and bullheads will be caught here when opened The 30 acres of land making up the grounds are located a mile west of Guide Rock in Webster County. It con be reached from highway No. 3.
With its state lodge, good camping grounds, 30 acre lake, boats, and excellent bass fishing, furnishes one of the best vacation grounds in the state. Its trees furnish cool. restful shade in a prairie country. The lodge offers hotel and other accommodations. To reach it, take state highways No. 13 and No. 14 to Spalding in Greeley County and continue 11 miles up the Cedar Valley.
Consists of six sand-pit lakes which hove been generously stocked with bass, croppies, sunfish, catfish, and bullheads lor the post few years. Camping sites are goad here. Take highway No. I to the south side of the Platte River adjacent lo Louisville in Cass County, The grounds ore located between the C. B. & Q. railroad and the Platte River. Water area approximately 40 acres.
Several hundred acres of wooded, scenic land furnish the site for Ponca State Pork in Dixon County near the city of Ponca. The park overlooks the Missouri River in the Ponca Indian country and will be a delightful place to comp and picnic Shelters, lookouts, trails, and other modern features will provide a pleasant time.
On the South Loup River near Oconto in Custer County, consists of 80 acres of land. The banks of the serene little South Loup make a wonderful place lor picnicking or camping.
Consists of two connected lakes partly State owned. In size, they are mode up of 245 acres. Resorts on the lakes furnish boots, meals, and camping sites. Fishing, which is free, is for bass, perch, and sunfish. Grounds are located in southeastern Cherry County in the lake group.
Has the distinction not only of having one of the largest springs in Nebraska. but one of the largest fish hatcheries in the middle west is located here The grounds include 100 acres of land six miles north of Parks, on Rock Creek in Dundy County. State highway No. 3 leads to it. This 60 acre lake provides excellent trout, boss, and sunfish sport.
LAKE AT PLATTEVIEW RECREATION GROUNDS
This area under construction. Excellent fishing, comping and picnicking available when opened to public. Take State Highway No. 2. Grounds one mile west of Ravenna.
A 20 acre body of waler, is the center for the, Richardson County Recreation Grounds near Verdon on state highway No. 4. Fishing for sunfish, crappie, and bullheads, camping and picnicking, furnish the recreation
Located in Adams County near the village off Ayr on the little Blue River. The grounds provide campin91, picnicking and fishing. Shelters, hiking paths, excellent shade and a lake and river offer the visitor cm interesting trip. Take State Highway No. 281, south from Hastings.
Is a spot where the modern tourist and visitor can see scenery such as our pioneers saw when they first came to this territory. The native trees provide a pleasing change from prairies and the place is inhabited by native animals and birds. Situated a few miles south of Gering in Scotts Bluff County, the hills are reached from ste highway No. 29 Lookouts, hiking trails, camping sites are to be found here.
Located in the Valentine U. S migratory waterfowl sanctuary. Fishing Toke U. S. Highway No. 20 south from Valentine.
Hundreds of fine tree specimens and flowers make Stolley State Park a beautiful, cool place to picnic. The shady spot is mode up of 43 acres and is situated south and adjacent to Grand Island in Holl County. There the visitor learns what con be done in planting trees on the prairie. State highways No. 2 and No. 11 lead to it.
Embraces the fifteen sand pit lakes found in Dodge County and cover a territory of 307 acres Good camping sites and nearby cabins help this spot meet all the requirements lor a good fishing trip. Bass, crappies, sunfish, catfish, and bullheads are found there. Follow the Lincoln highway four miles west of Fremont.

Your Permit Fee Helps Maintain Nebraska's Recreation Grounds

Economists gave to Nebraska its title "White Spot of the Nation" because of its unusual tax structure. Nebraska does not have a state income tax. No sales tax. No luxury tax. Nebraska has no punitive or "nuisance" taxes.
Nebraska has no bonded indebtedness. Its constitution prohibits state bonds. Nebraska pays as it goes! Nebraska has REDUCED its property tax. state and local. Nebraska has a rich, diversified industry- built around the wealth of its /arming industry which supplies food and raw materials to its manufacturers. Nebraska is one of the greatest livestock and grain-producing states in the United States with an average gross income of $313,048,000. Nebraska leads all other mid-western states in income per farm.
The population of Nebraska in the Federal census of 1930 was 1,377,963, an increase over the previous decade of 6.3%, Nebraska is 32nd among the slates in population and 151h in area with 77,520 square miles. The density of population is 17.6 per square mile.
Omaha, the largest city in the state, with a population of 214,006, is the 39th city in size in the United States.
Ninety per cent of the population of the state is native born white and 8,4% is foreign-born white.
The western portion of the state lies in the foothills of the Rocky Mountains, with on altitude of a little over 5,000 feet. The land slopes gradually to the southernmost corner, where the altitude is 842 feet. The average altitude in the plain that comprises the greater portion of the state is 2,000 feet.
Three great river systems, the Platte, the Niobrara and the Republican, flow easterly to the Missouri, giving Nebraska the greatest river mileage of any state.
